I wrote “Children of the Sun” while struggling quite badly with my mental health. This might be counterintuitive since it’s such a joyful song, but we often appreciate the things we don’t have more than the ones we have. So, after a really intense therapy session where I managed to feel my inner light for the first time in months, I felt overwhelmed by the joy of its rediscovery. I went into the garden and danced in the sun, laughing, crying, and singing—that’s how the chorus of the song was born.

This song is a declaration to myself and to the universe (or whoever else is listening) that I am ready to embrace my light fully—to celebrate life instead of hiding behind my shadows. Of course, the shadows are still there and there are highs and lows, but they don’t make our light worth less; if anything, it shines brighter upon a dark background. We’re children of the sun, and every part of us belongs. Through acceptance and authenticity, the beauty of the world is in taking it all in, allowing ourselves to be who we truly are as we navigate the lights and shadows.

We had a great time working on this track, which we recorded in the virtual studio with Dominic Romano as part of the Death and All Her Enemies album. It almost made it onto Ocean Inside of Me, making it the oldest song to find a place on this new project. I love this song, and I’m glad it finally found a home.
