About

I was once told that my craft is connection, and music is “just” the tool I use. This resonated with me, because I care deeply about our world and sometimes it feels like there’s not much I can do to help – but I can bring people together in a time when we face so much division. I can create a safe space in my music, I can trust people all over the world to host me, connect people at streams and shows that wouldn’t have met otherwise. I can remind people that no matter how heavy the news gets – there are good people everywhere. When my producer Dominic first heard this song he said, “this is like a Luna Keller mission statement.” I think he’s absolutely right.

I wrote this song after a lovely concert by James Gray, another fantastic musician who travels the world singing and telling his stories. I felt inspired by the way he put his experiences into songs so directly, and also by his excellent whistling. So I sat down to write a song about my journey, starting in the small town I grew up in, then moving to Germany, then a verse about my month couch-surfing in the USA. My favourite verse is the last one though, subverting expectations by taking the journey to hell: “I’m not scared, ’cause if I go to hell I know, there are good people everywhere.” Whoever tells you that an entire group of people is evil, it’s a lie. There’s goodness everywhere, I truly believe it, and I’ve experienced it over and over again on my travels. This song is an ode to that, a belief that even in our darkest hours as humanity, we have the capacity to be good. There’s more hope for us than we might think.

The song was produced in remote sessions with Dominic Romano as part of my “Death and all her Enemies” album, to be released in January. The wonderful Jory Avner played harmonica on it. We had a lovely moment on the video call realising that both Dominic and Jory hosted me during my time in the USA that I sing about in verse 3. So having them on the song is a real full-circle moment.

Lyrics

When I fell onto the main street of the town I called my home
People told me simple minded fools are all it’s ever known
well there are scars that they left me many moons have past
but my first love he was gentle and he was in the same class

Covers of books, stereotypes and dirty looks beware
’cause I grew up in this small town
and there are good people everywhere

When I moved up to the north  I was told I won’t make friends
they said people there are cold and rules are rarely bent
In the cue to a show some strangers took me in
we stood in the last row laughing, dancing, singing

Covers of books, stereotypes and dirty looks beware
’cause I moved to Germany
and there are good people everywhere

When I flew across the ocean I was told to watch out
they said guns are legal there and people fake and loud
on the plane I met a local we talked for 9 hours straight
not a night spent in a hotel not a moment spent afraid

Covers of books, stereotypes and dirty looks beware
’cause I flew to the USA
and there are good people everywhere

When I die there’s a chance heaven has no place for me
caught up in life’s dance I know where it could lead
but I’m sure around the fires in a circle of drunk sinners
we’ll hold each others trials and keep away the winter

Holy books bring it on I’m not scared
’cause if I go to hell I know
there are good people everywhere
there are good people everywhere
there are good people everywhere
