About

For a couple of years now, I’ve been writing custom songs for people, often for weddings and birthdays. There’s something delightful about becoming a mouthpiece for someone’s story, putting words to what they are feeling. When I started crowdfunding for Ocean Inside of Me, it felt like a fun reward to offer those who supported the highest tier a custom song. But what I wouldn’t have guessed is that one of these songs would become a favorite for me and end up on my next EP. And that’s exactly what happened with Same Street, a song I wrote for my dear friend Susanne to thank her for her support on Kickstarter.

Susanne, also known as Susbidi, is one of those pillars of support that keep the indie folk scene going. She curates beautiful playlists, hosts house and garden concerts regularly, and enthusiastically supports artists. I had the honor of playing two concerts at her home—one of them still holds the record for my longest show (almost three hours!) because the audience kept asking for more songs. So when Susanne asked me to write a song about the connection music creates for her—the way strangers become friends, and artists who were once just names are suddenly there in real life—I knew exactly what feeling she was talking about.

Working from her descriptions, I started writing a song and quickly realized I wasn’t just writing about Susanne anymore—I was writing about my own joy traveling the world, connecting with people, and playing shows. After a couple of revisions, the song was done, and both Susanne and I gained a song that puts into words what a gift it is to be part of the indie music community. I hope this song brings you joy and reminds you that you are a part of something beautiful.

Recording Same Street was such a fun experience! Dominic had the idea for us to play and record the two guitars together, to create the kind of connection you only get when you’re in the same room—very fitting for this song. We also asked Michael Stephenson to add some subtle piano to lift the song, as a way to honor Susanne, who plays the piano beautifully herself. And then there’s Harley Eblen’s beautiful cello, subtly lifting and responding to the phrases of the song. When I close my eyes, I can imagine all of us sitting in Susanne’s living room, playing the song together—the perfect sonic picture for this song.

Lyrics

Time loses meaning when I listen
When I wrap myself in song
All that I’m feeling in a line
That a stranger to me wrote

Words flood through my ears and eyes
Goosebumps when I realize
I see you and you see me
We’ve walked a mile on the same street

A name is just some letters
Until it has a face
It just keeps getting better
Come in and find a place

Words flood through my ears and eyes
Goosebumps when I realize
I see you and you see me
We’ve walked a mile on the same street

Words flood through my ears and eyes
Goosebumps when I realize
I see you and you see me
We’ve walked a mile on the same street

We’re not lonesome wanderers
Cause we’re not alone
We’ll sing till the night is over
Together we are whole
