About

I just hung up a sign in my studio that says “remember to hold space for your light”. So often music has been the space I pour my darkness into, and it’s beautiful and healing and cathartic. But it can be just as healing to pour light and love in it and celebrate the beauty of the path I’m on. “Wildflowers” is a song where I gave myself permission to be light, to celebrate myself through full self-acceptance. There are so many limiting beliefs that we get given and hold onto “you are not good enough”, “you have an expiry date, young is better than old”… and I think we are expected to struggle and cower under the weight of them. It’s almost scary to embrace our light, almost shameful to be proud and radiant.

A book that inspired me a lot at the time of writing this song is “Big Magic” by Elisabeth Gilbert. In it she writes fear a letter telling it that it can come along on the road trip but can’t choose directions or fiddle with the radio. I paid homage to that in the bridge “we can take out fear along, and stumble here and there, but we won’t let it choose the song or tell us what to wear”. So here’s to finding the courage to be light, to dance to our own music and learn to love the things that make us who we are.

Beyond the meaning of the song itself, “Wildflowers” was also the song that helped me find the concept for my upcoming album “Death and all her Enemies”. I had shared it with my patrons alongside 4 other songs and let them choose wich one to record, they picked this song. While working on it I realized that I want to make more music that comes from a place of light and that my next album should be a celebration of life. The concept has evolved from there but “Death and all her Enemies” would not be what it is without Wildflowers, so it only feels fitting for it to be the first single released of the new album.

Lyrics

Underneath the wildflowers
Dirt behind my fingernails
Parted lips pointed at the sky
I am made of nothing else
Need no walls no gates no towers
I’ll be free till the day I die

You can’t take my light from me
An ocean can’t touch the atmosphere
So try instead to dance with me
Till your heart is light and your mind is clear
Ua ua aaaaa ua ua aaaaa

Butterflies sleep in my hair
My skins adorned by the wear and tear
The intricate patterns of time
There's no need to fit the mold
I get prettier when I'm old
And celebrate each chapter of my life

You can throw your stones at me
I’ll build a house where they land
Maybe you can come over for tea
I’ll teach you how to dance
Ua ua aaaa ua ua aaaaaaa

Ultimately it’s all made up anyway
So why should I fear when I can play?
I don’t think it’s a serious as they say
I think you’re already more than ok

So we can take our fears along
And stumble here and there
But we won’t let it choose the song
Or tell us what to wear

Ua ua aaaaaa ua ua aaaaaaaa

Underneath the wildflowers
Dirt behind my fingernails
Parted lips pointed at the sky
I am made of nothing else
Need no walls no gates no towers
I’ll be free till the day I die
